Fashion conscious friends and trends

When it comes to birthdays, the ideas for gifts can come in all sorts of shapes and sizes. But, what should you buy? Is it a case of heading to Hallmark for a personalised card, or is there more to it than that? We will investigate.

Traditionally, it tended to be that for your best friends you would pick out something special that means something to them and for acquaintances you would offer gift vouchers, but this is changing more and more frequently. Trends are constantly changing, so be fashion conscious and take the time to consider which present works best.

Buying a gadget

We all love technology today, in fact we don’t know where to stop with all the gadgets in our pockets, handbags or homes. So, consider the chance to splash out on music players, headphones, music downloads and other affordable products when looking for top gifts. We all listen to music on the go, and that means the market for headsets is vast, and there are some offers which make this an economic option.

Clothes and accessories or gift vouchers?

Clothing has long been a birthday and Christmas gift given on these special occasions to satisfy the wants of fashion conscious lads or ladettes. But, what should you buy? Jewellery and perfumes or shirts and aftershave? It can be hard to know what to get, and we’re all picky so why not throw a gift voucher into the mix. Buying something for somebody to wear is a risk, so be sure that they definitely want this accessory or clothing before buying. If not, what’s the worst that could happen with a gift card or shopping spree day?

A personalised birthday card

The latest trend that continues to take the world by storm is the greeting cards that have that special, unique message for the recipient. What could be better than having the whole gang on the front on a boozy night, or that time you went camping at Snowdon? Memories need to be cherished, and this is a great way to remember them on someone’s special day. It’s not just the pictures that can be used though, personalise your message to make it memorable.

Concert tickets

Is Jay-Z in town or is Ellie Goulding rocking up somewhere in the near future? If so, buying a gift of a ticket for someone to watch their favourite artists or bands is a great way to touch the heart of someone. Whether it’s a full blown festival or an intimate gig, there are plenty for sale around the country for every different musical genre. Even if music’s not there thing, then something like a trip to the theatre can be just as giving.

Just how do they do it? London fashion weeks hairstyle perfection

London Fashion Week came and went in the blink of an eye, and we are now ready to be tempted by winter florals, military gear and padded hips from some of the hottest brands. It was an event that saw the return of Alexander McQueen and Stella McCartney and was a big boost for the fashion culture of the country.

While there is still some way to go for London to becoming as recognised and influential as the other three “Big Four” fashions weeks that take place in New York, Paris and Milan, the stars were out in force and the hair was wild. But, with all of us struggling with damaged hair thanks to winter, how do models enjoy the runway, and have their hair to perfection despite the rigorous routines?

Hair trends from London fashion week

From head to toe, quite literally, there was something to discuss from the models and in many ways it was the hair that created more talking points. With McQueen and Burbery Prosrum going for retro and reserved looks, we saw Louise Gray and Sibling go to the opposite end of the spectrum with crazy hair styles. We’ve found our top five:

• Centre partings – From Burberry to Marios Schwab, this was a common trend of the week and feature in pretty much every show. To keep it pretty and young, the designers placed emphasis on not using combs to ensure natural partings for the models.
• Wet-look – Many people point to the summer sport trend and the upcoming Olympics for this, but many shows used product heavy, wet-look hair to create an extra touch of sexy for Holly Fulton and others.
• Super straight – Often worn with pigtails or ponytails, this futuristic look was seen across a number of shows. With a flat finish, it was the perfect choice for the shows of Craig Lawrence and Richard Nicoll.
• Natural – With texture and curls out of the way for many this year, natural movement took centre stage in some shows. Creating bends and kinks through wrapping hair around irons, movement was added before it was styled into a left down, ponytail or an updo.

Tips for model perfect hair

It might seem like it comes naturally for models to have beautiful and perfect hair all the time, but it doesn’t always work like that. Many things in life need practice and precision, and this is the same for models on the runway.

Simple things like knowing what the sun and weather does to their hair along with knowing exactly how to care for their locks is crucial in keeping the colour and shape of your hair. Using products like John Frieda Full Repair can give you the shine that we saw at London fashion week but walking through your town centre.

It’s crucial things like not getting stressed when things go right, knowing what hair colour will complement your skin tone and what super foods to eat to keep their skin and hair healthy. Having your hair dryer on for too long and at too high a heat can be the difference between split ends that need treatment and the perfect look.

Fashion week catwalks, clothes make-up and perfume

The catwalk season is well and truly upon us, with London, New York, Milan and the like all giving top designers the first chance to showcase their latest collections. The uninitiated amongst us will think that all there is to these shows is dressing up the models and pointing them in the right direction to do what they do best. This, however, couldn’t be further from the truth.

Months of planning can go into a single show, from set design to lighting, choosing the models, last minute tweaks to clothes, music and make-up all play a part in making a fashion show more of a spectacle than anything else. Top designers have been known to blow millions on making sure that every minute detail is perfect, and the buzz surrounding their shows and the sales generated from them prove they have got it right.

Event management teams often work around the clock to put into action what the designer has come up with, it may be their ideas you see out there but is thanks to the hard work of the behind the scenes team that turn these ideas into reality. The designer’s first step is generally the set design, which is appropriate for their collection. Deciding which city to give the collection its debut is the next big decision.

Many have their favourites; such as London for Autumn/Winter or Paris for swimwear, and as each venue is very different they have to ensure that what they envisage can become reality. The various venues will have slightly different lay outs, or lighting, and once again it is the job of the events team to ensure that everything is perfected for the big night, and everything runs smoothly.

The programmes that go with the top shows are like gold dust, and companies pay a small fortune to advertise in them. Flick through the programme for a top show and you will see stunning advertisements for the like of hair products, make-up and perfume, and being credited with being a part of a show can treble sales overnight, giving a huge boost to upcoming companies who have been given the chance of a lifetime.

David Beckham reveals his pants preferences

David Beckham was recently interviewed about his underwear preferences to which he stated, “When I’m playing football I definitely wear briefs, but I do enjoy boxer shorts as well, especially those by Calvin Klein.

I find that generally if boxer shorts have too much material then they can get quite uncomfortable in the trousers, this is why I generally prefer to wear them just at night.” It was clear that the interview was making him somewhat uncomfortable, and at times he would adjust his clothing and stroke his face.

This February saw the launch of an underwear range from David Beckham that is going on sale at the Swedish retailer H&M. It is possible to buy boxers in the range for around £10 or a pair or briefs for around eight pounds.

H&M has a presence in 40 countries around the world and combined has 1800 stores. In the past, H&M has had a great many partnerships with famous brands but these tend to be short lived. Mr Beckham has commented that his relationship with the company is going to be an ongoing one.

It is expected that the partnership is going to last at least five years and it is expected to be rather fruitful for Mr Beckham. There have been no public announcements about how much he is getting paid but it is expected that the price is very high. The brand was initially going to launch by itself and along with his business partner he had fully developed the underwear and all the packaging required.

Edie Campbell showcases Fullcircle collection

Edie Campbell, the British model, has recently been getting a lot of attention in the fashion industry and she has just been involved in a new campaign for FullCircle. Previously, she was modelling for Burberry and she has a charm and beauty that seems almost effortless.

It was her casting for British Vogue by Mario Testino that brought her to people’s attention and this started in people’s minds her association with artistic style and elegance.

She models for numerous fashion companies including Marc Jacobs, Burberry, Anya Hindmarch and, just recently, FullCircle. She is also currently studying art history and enjoys such interests as horse racing.

Many from the fashion world are thinking that she is going to be a model that people see more of in coming years. The new advertising campaign from FullCircle is focused on femininity and utilises a lot of delicate fabrics.

There are touches of floral inspiration in the clothing and these are often combined with unusual Japanese prints. They are mostly in muted tones and one of the most interesting pieces of clothing features a design of a bird that has been sketched by hand. The new range certainly has a great sense of summer about it.

Changes expected to British Fashion Council exhibition

As the launch of the British Fashion Council’s annual exhibition draws closer, the organisation has announced that it had made some changes to the previous format – reducing the amount of space available for exhibitors and changing the focus from promoting new and established names in British fashion to a more themed collection of objects and designs.

Over 100 designers and labels have been invited to exhibit their autumn and winter creations for the 2012/13 season at the event which opens in late-February. The CEO of the British Fashion Council, Caroline Rush, believes the changes will improve the event and bring more focus to the layout of the exhibition itself, while still playing its main role of promoting young British fashion designers.

Attended by buyers from all the major fashion houses, as well as journalists and photographers from around the world, the BFC exhibition features several new names in British design, including Lucas Nascimento and Huishan Zhang from NEWGEN. And a few lucky members of the public will be able to attend the BFC events at London Fashion Weekend after the organisation launched a competition.

Entrants need to collect stamps from 20 different London venues famous for their links to fashion and culture to be in with a chance of winning the weekend tickets, which include front row seats to catwalk shows, the services of a personal stylist, free drinks and snacks and £250. A map showing all the venues can be downloaded from the BFC website.

Marc Jacobs at fashion week in New York

The most popular show during the fashion week in New York was definitely the one put on by Marc Jacobs. It was no surprise that when the show went ahead recently there were a large number of celebrities there to see it. All the famous people who came to see the show couldn’t have been disappointed by the showmanship of Mr Jacobs.

The set was like a mystical forest and provided an excellent backdrop for showing off the designer’s latest winter collection. Fur hats and large shoes appeared to be some of the latest trends, as were fur coats with sequins that made them seem to almost be covered in snow flakes.

The fashion director of InStyle magazine is Hal Rubenstein and he commented, “Mr Jacobs has a way with theatrics that many other designers don’t. The lighting is fantastic, the sound is well-developed and the set is something to behold. He has a way of putting the ‘show’ in fashion show. The show recently seemed to be some sort of fairytale and it was certainly very beautiful and unique.”

All of the guests at the show seemed to be enthralled by the set, almost more than they were by the clothes themselves. Both of these things though were exceptional, and it seems as if Mr Jacobs continues to cement himself as one of the world’s leading fashion designers.

Mr Rubenstein continued, “His set is obviously very over styled but he does this on purpose because he knows it’s what the audience are coming to see. The clothes he puts on display are spectacular in themselves. People know that they are going to have something to look forward to and when they are put together with his beautiful sets, it creates an experience quite unlike anything else in the fashion world.”

All hail the return of the anorak

It’s time to wind the clock back 40 years and embrace the return of the anorak as the hot look for spring and summer 2012.

This coat which is synonymous with nerds and trainspotters has been completely remodelled and now looks really cool, especially with skinny jeans and a tee shirt. Teamed up with a dress it also looks very cute and casual.

There is no need for plus sized ladies to miss out on this great trend either, as Bonprix (www.bonprix.co.uk) has a fabulous range of plus sized anoraks that are bang on trend. One that is set to be a huge hit is the plus size fishtail parka that has a looks of the mods about it with its fishtail hemline. The longer style makes it perfect with jeans, and the drawstring waist and buckle detailing at the back create a very flattering shape.

The faux fur that edges the hood is also right on trend, as are the sand and camel pastel colour options, but for those preferring a darker colour you can also get them in olive and black. The parka is available in all sizes from 14-30 and costs £27.95 irrespective of size.

If you are looking for a lighter anorak then the button through mac will be perfect. The shiny fabric also makes it ideal for both day and evening wear, and will literally go with anything you are wearing. This coat has a funnel neck and drawstring waist which is very flattering, is available in black or sand in sizes 14-28 and costs £44.95.

Rugby style demonstrated by Gareth Thomas

Rugby players are not usually known for their keen sense of style, but Gareth Thomas stands out as a man that knows fashion when he sees it, and a man that knows how to make an impression.

Gareth is currently known best as the favourite to win Celebrity Big Brother and one of the first gay athletes to openly speak about his sexuality. For this, the Pink List has added him to their list of the UK’s 101 most influential gay people.

Although Gareth may not have the perfect supermodel looks given his rough game of choice, he does have some great company within the fashion industry. Louboutin in fact claims that he was their inspiration for mens footwear and continues to be an inspiration for their menswear ranges. The prominent loafers in the line are called the Alfie Flat after his Big Brother nickname and are made out of gold patent leather with soft velvet lining the insides.

Right now, Gareth is focused on being the nice guy inside of the Big Brother house, but when his stint on reality television is over most likely there will be a great deal of the public waiting to see what he does next. He already has fame as a superstar of the rugby world, for being an inspirational speaker and has backers in the fashion industry.

Therefore, it would seem that Gareth has opportunities waiting at every door, and it will be interesting to see which door he decides to walk through.
