22 year old designer in Debenhams fashion push

Debenhams has forever been the place to shop for your wardrobe staples instead of high end fashion. But they are starting to carve a niche as a place to purchase cutting edge clothing as well. A new capsule collection will be launched by the department store by a promising new young designer this fall.

Maria Hawkins, all of 22, competed against 29 other Manchester Metropolitan University students in the Debenhams competition to find fashion’s next big name. There were three finalists and shoppers got to vote on the designer with the best clothes.

Maria was victorious as she impressed the judges including Deborah Linton, Ben de Lisi and Karen Peacock the design director of Debenhams with her simple, elegant designs and bright colors. Included in the prize will be training she will get from industry experts for one month while she goes on developing her collection. Then the collection will go on sale at the Manchester Debenhams city centre store.

The director of design of Debenhams said how effortless, pure and lux her designs look. Adding that the line was commercial but not boring as well as being considered chic and ready to be sold now.

Alexander Wang, Alexander McQueen and Celine’s designs are where Maria gets her inspiration and she was told of her winning the competition just hours after graduating with a BA Hons. in Fashion.

She said she was over the moon and she did not expect it since everyone really deserved it and she is very excited about the entire things. She knows how much of an opportunity it is for her and wants to take full advantage of it.

Winning she said has given her the confidence to put her work and face out there and will give her access to some of the best people in the industry who she would never thought she would have met this early in her career.
