Amazon’s online fashion store launches

Amazon officially launched their new premium fashion store online today in an effort to compete with the likes of ASOS and Net-A-Porter. The US online multi-retailer has chosen ‘Mega Monday’ to launch their new sale. Mega Monday is considered to be the largest online shopping day of the year.

It was reported that at one point Amazon considered making a bid on ASOS, but instead is attempting to replicate its success in technology and books by attacking the fashion world. The new fashion world that will exist on the sub site is thought to have already signed up some premium brands including Black Orchid, 7 For All Mankind, and Pringle.

Managing Director of, Christopher North, stated that more of their customers have already discovered that there are many benefits to shopping online and they are working on increasing their fashion offerings by offering some trendy and aspirational brands to them.

Last year Amazon sold more than three million items and took on average about 35 orders per second on Mega Monday in 2011. Visa Europe predicts that this year about £320 million will be spent online by the close of the day and that this will be the busiest shopping day of the year.

Due to high expectations Marks & Spencer has already hired over 800 employees to work at its US distribution centres and doubled the amount of people that will be staffing its e-commerce call centre.

Multi-channel development director for M&S, David Walmsley, stated that they have been preparing for the big day for months to make sure that they are ready and fully prepared to handle all of the large orders that they expect to receive. He added that Christmas can be a very hectic time for customers so they are attempting to make it as easy as possible.
