Take a Journey Around America’s Deep South

If you’re looking for something a little different for your holiday this year, why not head to America’s Deep South? Known for down home good old fashioned Southern hospitality, you’ll be welcomed so warmly that you’ll never want to leave. If you’re a fan of Elvis, The Dixie Chicks, the Blues and Jazz, films like Sweet Home Alabama, Forest Gump or The Dukes of Hazard and tv shows such as Hart of Dixie, this part of the world should be top of your list. So where should you visit?

Memphis

Follow in the footsteps of the legends that are Elvis, Johnny Cash and Jerry Lee Lewis as you explore this amazing city. For a great night out, you can’t miss Beale Street. It’s where the Blues grew up in the 40’s and still looks like a charming American street, with its old buildings and neon signs. Now packed to the rafters with restaurants, bars and music spots, it’s the place to go for a night on the town.

There are some great trips to take in Memphis. Perhaps take a tour of the city in a 1955 Cadillac, visit Sun Studios, hit the shops, sample some amazing food and, of course, no trip to Memphis would be complete without a visit to the home of The King himself, Graceland.

Alabama

Good old fashioned Southern charm can be found by the bucket load here. With a fascinating history and a people incredibly proud of their roots, it’s a state that can transport you from quaint Southern town to bustling metropolitan city in the blink of an eye. Mobile is a particularly pretty city in Alabama and well worth a visit if you have a love of history, or you want to enjoy a little romance while you’re away. If you fancy hitting the beach, the stunning Gulf Coast of Alabama offers mile upon mile of glorious sandy beaches, just perfect for soaking up the sun, sampling some amazing seafood and having a blast frolicking in the waves with the kids.

Mississippi

You can’t venture far in Mississippi without hearing the famous tones of the Mississippi Blues, whether that’s playing from a car radio as it passes you on the streets or in one of the famous blues clubs throughout the state. You simply can’t miss the chance to ride a paddle boat up the majestic Mississippi River and you can even visit the birthplace of Elvis at Tupelo. Here you get to see the room in which Elvis was born and where he played as a boy. The area is rich in history and you’ll see many a plantation, the historic city of Natchez and so much more.

Wherever you decide to visit in this wonderful area of the United States, you can be sure of one thing – it gets hot! Needless to say a summer wardrobe of vests, shorts, the odd maxi dress and sandals or pumps is more suited to the often incredibly hot climate here. Luckily you can find everything you need, including a gorgeous light and cool maxi dress from George at ASDA, so you’ll have everything you need to stay cool while you discover the Deep South on a holiday with a difference.
