This season’s hottest denim shorts

Here is a selection of characteristics to look out for in this season’s denim shorts.

High Waisted

Bring a touch of retro chic to your wardrobe with some high waisted denims. Perfect with a vest top and button up shirt with a pair of relaxed espadrilles for a relaxed but chic daytime look or with some tough boots and a slinky top for an evening gig, these shorts are more versatile than you think.

Embellished

Studs, lace and leather are all the rage this season – but aren’t exactly the easiest things to pull off. Just look at Cher. Embellished shorts from the likes of New Look (who do a really fun pair embroidered with dollar signs) give a subtle nod to the latest trends while still being totally easy to wear.

Colourful

This year’s hottest shades are already hitting the high street –  pretty macaron-inspired pastels; neutrals like stone grey and sage green inspired by nature; the perennially fashionable cherry red and dark navy are a welcome alternative to the usual denim blue.

Classic Cut Offs

It’s always tempting to try fashioning a pair of cut-offs yourself by butchering a pair of old jeans. Believe me, I’ve tried – it’s not a good idea. My shorts could only have been worn by someone with one leg drastically shorter than the other who was a bit of an exhibitionist. In any case, your classic cut-off is such a fashion staple, and the high street versions are so good – that you may as well save your dignity and invest in a pair. New Look has a pair in a darker blue than you usually find for cut-offs – unusual and super-flattering.

Hot Pants

Daisy dukes, short shorts – whatever you want to call them – they’re totally back in fashion. Beloved by festival goers who like to pair them with some cute wellies and knee-high socks, and holidayers alike – they’re a perfect way of getting your pins out on a balmy summer’s day. Best paired with comfortable flats and a t-shirt for a classic summer look.

Board shorts

For those of us who don’t quite have the figure to pull off bum-skimming hot pants, longer-line board shorts are a great alternative for casual summer shorts. Perfect for walks in the countryside and lazy lunches, longer shorts look great with hi-tops and a classic T.
